Umpire Simon Taufel finally gets a chance to stand in a World Cup final after the International Cricket Council made the appointments of the umpires and match referee for the mega game in Mumbai on Saturday, featuring India and Sri Lanka.
Taufel, who had stood in the finals of the 2004 Champions Trophy and the finals of T20 World Cup 2007 between India and Pakistan, did not get a chance to stand in the past four World Cup finals as Australia made it to the last game on all four occasions.
Aleem Dar would be standing alongside Taufel in the April 2 game in Mumbai.
Dar's last World Cup final was the one in 2007 when he faced some criticism for misinterpreting the rules regarding bad light.
However, both the umpires have been at their best in this World Cup, almost carrying a flawless record. It also should be noted that Simon Taufel was the Umpire of the Year for five consecutive years from 2004 to 2008 while Aleem Dar took over the title in 2009 and 2010.
The match official appointments are as follows:
2 April - Sri Lanka v India, Mumbai: Jeff Crowe (match referee), Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar (both on-field), Ian Gould (third umpire), Steve Davis (fourth umpire)
