Karunanidhi presents Rs 3 crores to Indian team

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday presented Rs three crore to the World Cup-winning Indian cricket team, besides awarding Rs one crore to off-spinner R Ashwin, who hails from the state.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina, both of whom play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, were awarded their share of Rs 21.42 lakh by Karunanidhi at a function which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Karunanidhi also presented cheques due for other members of the team to BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, an official release said.

The Chief Minister lauded the cricketers for their historic feat which came after 28 years when Kapil Dev's men had defeated the West Indies in 1983.

Later, speaking to reporters, Dhoni thanked Karunanidhi and the state government for the gesture and added that the Chief Minister had passed on his good wishes when the team was playing the mega-event.
