Virender Sehwag will return to India after the final test against England. The Indian batting stalwart is said to have not fully recovered from the shoulder surgery which he underwent after the IPL this year. Ishant Sharma will also miss the ODI tour through an injury.
Ajinkya Rahane and Varun Aaron have been called up instead.
India were already depleted by injuries to senior players such as Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar during the Test series, and England won the first three matches by huge margins. In the process, Andrew Strauss's home team dislodged India as the number one Test side in the official rankings.
Gautam Gambhir might also miss out on the ODI series after suffering a mild concussion while fielding and even though scans did not reveal a major injury, the left-hander was in discomfort while batting.
Sehwag failed to make a positive impact for the struggling Indian team failing in all four innings and only managing to compound the problems for the dressing room. Sehwag had a horror start to the series getting out on a king pair in the 3rd test, while he could only manage 8 and 33 in the ongoing Test.
It is understood that the Delhi dasher has had a word with the two on-tour selectors and advised them of his situation after which he was given permission to return home and recuperate.
"The shoulder injury has not completely healed. He will return after the Test series," a BCCI source told ESPNcricinfo. Sehwag is also suffering from hearing problems after he was exposed to a loud sound before he made his way to England. The source told the website that "Sehwag has some visual and balancing problems, which persist."
There were talks about Sehwag requesting the team management to let him go back home after the first day's play at the Oval, but these rumours were quashed by Indian team manager Anirudh Chaudhary.
After a half fit Zaheer Khan, who only bowled a few overs in the first Test before he sustained a hamstring injury, this is the second instance of a not-fully-fit Indian player who has been asked to play a part in this tour.
The limited-overs leg of the tour starts with a Twenty20 international at Manchester on August 31, followed by five one-day matches between September 3 and 16.
