South African captain Graeme Smith is set to be fit for his side's Test series against India after Cricket South Africa (CSA) expressed confidence that he would make a timely recovery.
Left-hand batsman Smith was unable to bat during the second innings of the final Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi following the aggravation of a finger fracture he had suffered earlier in the tour.
“Graeme Smith sustained a hand injury during the series against Pakistan,” Dr. Shuaib Manjra, chairman of CSA’s medical committee, said.
He also added,“This hampered his performance and he was not able to take part in the second innings of the final Test.
“Graeme consulted a hand surgeon on the Cricket South Africa Medical Panel today, Friday November 26.
“Following that consultation we have been given the assurance that Graeme’s injury is healing within expectation and we are confident that he will make a full recovery and be available for the entire series against India.
“He will begin training with the team when they reconvene on the 12th December, 2010.
“Graeme will be reviewed in two weeks’ time for a further assessment. In the meantime the Proteas’ medical team will continue with his rehabilitation."
