Mumbai: There’s some bad news for Kolkata Knight Riders supporters.Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir is doubtful for the IPL eliminator match against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury.
The injury, which Gambhir picked up during KKR’s last league game against MI, also puts his availability for the West Indies tour in jeopardy. Gambhir was uneasy while fielding at Eden during his team’s loss to MI on May 22nd.
An MRI scan on Tuesday revealed injury to his right shoulder. The exact nature of the injury though is not known. It is also not clear whether Gambhir needs surgery, rehab or rest to recover from the injury.
His unavailability could be a body blow for KKR’s title aspirations. Despite the pain, Gambhir may decide to take the field on Wednesday to help his team beat MI.
Gambhr was set to lead team India in the one-off T20 international and the five-match ODI series in the West Indies. In his absence, vice-captain Suresh Raina will have to take on the mantle of captain. Gambhir’s absence will be acutely felt by the Indian team already missing the services of seniors like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and captain MS Dhoni. Sehwag is recovering from a shoulder surgery, while the others have been rested for the tour.
In 2008, a shoulder injury had forced Gambhir to miss the away Test series against Australia.
