Sachin Tendulkar announces retirement from ODIs, wants to focus on Test cricket:

Putting an end to his 23-year old one-day career, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar today announced retirement from the 50-over format.

Sachin Tendulkar will not pad up against Pakistan next Sunday. After 23 years of playing one-day internationals, the batting great has announced retirement from the 50-over format of the game.

Sachin's announcement came on a day that the Indian team for the two T20s and three ODIs with Pakistan, to be played starting next week, is being decided. Sachin has already stopped playing T20s.

The Board of control for cricket in India (BCCI) released Sachin's statement on Sunday morning. It read, "I have decided to retire from the One Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest. I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years."

"I have decided to retire from the One-Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest," the 39-year-old said in a statement released by the BCCI today.

"I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years," he added.

Tendulkar, considered the most complete batsman in modern cricket and one who was considered next only to the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, retires from the ODI format at the top of the run-getters' list.

Tendulkar goes out after amassing 18,426 runs in 463 one-dayers at an average of 44.83. The diminutive right-hander has an astonishing 49 hundreds in the format, including a double hundred -- the first in this form of the game.

Tendulkar made his ODI debut against Pakistan way back in 1989 and interestingly he is quitting the scene just ahead of another series against the arch-rivals.

The Mumbaikar, who made himself unavailable for Twenty20 after playing just one game in 2006, will now remain active in only the Test arena.

The brightest moment of his ODI career came last year when he finally became part of a World Cup winning Indian team after five previous appearances.

Tendulkar's Test records are as awe-inspiring. The right-hander has 15,645 runs at an average of 54.32 in 194 Tests that he has played so far. The tally includes 51 hundreds and 66 half-centuries.

IPL 2013 (season 6) auction on February 3rd 2013

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will open their campaign at home against last year's semifinalist Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural match of the Pepsi Indian Premier League VI at the historic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata on April 3. 

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Premiere League (IPL), Raman Sundar tweeted that the auctions for the latest edition of the IPL would be held on Feb 3rd in Mumbai. 

The 2013 season's lung opener could not have got any better as two of the strongest teams in the tournament will set the tone for the high-octane Twenty20 tournament that will go on for eight weeks. 

One of the many highlights of the sixth edition of the tournament will be the debut of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who joined the IPL fraternity in October this year. 

They will begin their IPL innings with a home game against Pune Warriors India on April 5. 

The tournament will be played in the same format as the 2012 edition. Each of the nine participating teams will play the other eight twice -- home and away. The top four teams, at the end of the round-robin stage on May 19 will qualify for the Playoffs. 

The Qualifier 1 and Eliminator games will be played at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai -- the home ground of the IPL 2012 runners-up - on May 21 and May 22 respectively. 

The Qualifier 2 encounter and the Final, will be played at the Eden Gardens -- the home ground of the 2012 edition winners -- on May 24 and 26 respectively. 

As many as eleven venues have been confirmed to host the matches. The nine home venues apart, matches will be played at two arenas that will be making their ODI debuts in January. The last two 'home' games of the Kings XI Punjab will be played at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala, which has hosted seven IPL matches since 2010. 

The Jharkhand State Cricket Association International Stadium Complex at Ranchi, will host the last two 'home' games of the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Give Tendulkar his emotional space: Anil Kumble to critics

Amidst the growing clamour for Sachin Tendulkar's retirement, former India skipper Anil Kumble on Thursday hit out at critics questioning the veteran batsman's place in the team, saying he should be left alone and given the "emotional space" and respect he deserves.

Tendulkar's prolonged lean patch led many people to question his place in the Indian team but Kumble says it's not the time to point fingers at him but support him.

"There have been instances when he has been the sole reason for India's wins, but he has never been the sole reason for India's losses. It’s best to leave it to him to deal with what is in front of him now, because no one else has been in his position. No one else has played 192 Tests, made 34,000 runs, or scored 100 centuries. Let's not jump the gun, let's give the man the respect he deserves," Kumble wrote in his column for the 'Week' magazine.

"For 23 years, he has helped people dream, he has made them feel better emotionally. More's the reason why we need to give him his emotional space now," he wrote.

"...This is the time for him to be left alone. He is such a great player that he doesn't need anyone else's advice on how to score runs. He just needs people to back off and allow him to work out what he needs to return to run-scoring ways, which I am confident he will," he added.

Kumble said that it's not only Tendulkar, who is going through a bad phase but the whole Test team and implying that team is doing bad because of Tendulkar's poor form would be highly unfair.

"For the first time, people are questioning his place in the team. The expectations are that he should retire because his performances over the last year or so haven’t matched the standards he has set over the previous 22 years. Yes, we have not seen the best of Sachin in this phase, but it is not just him alone. If you look at the overall picture, the team has struggled in Test cricket, so are we suggesting that India are still a one-man army, still totally dependent on Sachin? I think not," he said.

Ricky Ponting announces retirement ; to retire after third test

        Ricky Ponting has announced his retirement from international cricket and the third Test against South Africa at Perth will be his final game. 

Addressing a press conference ahead of the third and final Test at the WACA, Ponting said that the time was right as he felt that he was not contributing enough for the success of the team. 

"A few hours ago I let the team know about my decision to make this Test match my last. At the end of the day it was based on my results and my output in this series so far. I said all along I would continue to play as long as I'm contributing to wins." 

"My immediate focus is what we're presented with tomorrow and that's an unbelievable opportunity," he said. "I'm hungrier than ever. I want this win more than any game I've been a part of." 

Asked whether there was any single dismissal that prompted the decision to retire or if the selectors forced him to, Ponting said: "There hasn't been one dismissal or one moment, but just a build-up of consistent failure. This is not a decision that was made by the selectors, this was made by me. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to finish on my terms. They've (teammates) never seen me emotional, but they have this morning." 

Ever the competitor, Ponting said the time to look back over his career would come after the Perth test, where victory for Australia would see them leapfrog South Africa to return to the top of the test rankings. 

"It's a great opportunity. We're going into what I consider to be almost a Grand Final," he said. 

"As I said to the boys this morning, I'm hungrier than ever and I want this win probably more than any other game I've played. If we get back to the top of the tree, to the top of the world, there's no better time for me to bow out." 

Ponting said he would continue playing domestic cricket for the remainder of the summer with Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
