Melbourne : The 2015 World Cup organizers have confirmed that the one-day final is likely to be played on the last weekend of March at a yet-to-be-determined Australian venue, with Melbourne and Sydney emerging as favourites to host the final.The tournament will begin in February, with matches played in New Zealand and all Australian states over six weeks.AFL chiefs, keen to take control of the MCG in mid-March starting next year, have been briefed about the World Cup plans
“It`s too early to say where the final will be held but the MCG is an obvious contender as are some other venues,” ICC World Cup chief executive John Harnden said.“We have already started discussions with the AFL about any potential disruption to their calendar and we will be meeting with other sports.... I think they recognise that the ICC Cricket World Cup is one of the biggest tournaments in world sport and a great event for Australia and New Zealand,” he said. Cricket Victoria chief Tony Dodemaide yesterday said the final belonged at the MCG.
“Absolutely it does. The MCG is the birthplace of Australian cricket. It has a capacity of 100,000 and is a genuine cricket ground. We hosted the final here in 1992, where a record crowd came to a game where Australia didn`t even participate,” Dodemaide said.But NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events George Souris said Sydney should get the nod, and added that a 170 million dollars upgrade of the SCG would be crucial to the decision.Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland has, however, warned that neither Melbourne nor Sydney had a mortgage on the final.

South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis will not play in all the five ODIs against Sri Lanka as he plans in advance to participate in what could be his sixth and last World Cup for the country in 2015. "I think I will play in at least the first two and then decide about the rest of the series," Kallis said. Kallis explained that he would be talking to Proteas coach Gary Kirsten about his plans. A week after being written off following a pair in the second Test against Sri Lanka, Kallis led the Proteas to series victory with a double century during the final Test --his 150th -- in Cape Town last week. Thrilled at the success at his favourite ground, Kallis said he had no plans to retire yet, and still dreamt of winning the World Cup for South Africa. "Only time will tell whether I'll get another chance to do that. I doubt whether I'll still be able to play for another 10 years, because no one has the right to play in South Africa. It's a privilege that you have to earn," Kallis was quoted as saying by weekly 'City Press'.

Cricket's governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved a new system of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup here on Monday.
It is a result of a humiliating u-turn by the ICC after they had originally announced that the 2015 tournament would be just contested by the 10 Test-playing countries.
However, following a negative reaction to that they have decided to organise qualifying which will see four second tier countries end up fighting out the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
There will be a new 50-over League introduced which will serve as the qualifying programme for the World Cup.
The top two teams in the eight team 50-over League will qualify automatically for the World Cup and the remainder of the teams will be joined by the teams finishing third and fourth in the World Cricket League Division 2.
The top two teams will compete in the new League to decide the remaining two qualifiers. The event will take place at a venue and on a date still to be decided.
Ireland coach Phil Simmons was delighted with the announcement as his side would be among the favourites to fill one of the spots - they have a rich recent World Cup pedigree having beaten Pakistan four years ago and then England this year in the group stages.
"It certainly gives all the one-day games in the league some extra spice, and there's sure to be some high-pressure games as the league progresses," said Simmons.
The competition has already begun, and Ireland are up and running.
"We've got off to a good start beating Namibia twice, and we'll be looking to add to that with wins against Canada," said Simmons, a former West Indies opening batsman.
"We've tried to schedule the games to give ourselves the best chance of having everyone available, which isn't always easy."
ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said that this system would enable all countries no matter what level they were at the moment.
"This will provide exciting context for the new 50-over League with every one of the Associate and Affiliate teams able to make their way from Division eight of the World Cricket League all the way to the ICC Cricket World Cup finals," said Lorgat.
While the 2015 World Cup will be a 14-team competition the 2019 World Cup will be a scaled-down 10-team event, with the top eight places being awarded to the top-ranked teams and two berths being awarded in a pre-qualifying tournament.
Hong Kong: The 2015 World Cup will comprise of 14 teams, a change from the original ten-team format, which means the Associates are back in the competition, ESPNcricinfo has learned. Four Associate teams will line up alongside ten Full Members in Australia and New Zealand, just like it was during the 2011 World Cup. The decision to reinstate the Associates, which was taken on the third day of the ICC's annual conference in Hong Kong, is a reversal of the ICC's heavily-criticised move to restrict the 2015 tournament to the Full Members.
On Monday, the second day of the conference, the ICC's chief executives' committee (CEC) had recommended to the executive board that there be a qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup, giving the Associates hope. It did not specify the number of slots open to Associates though, nor did it recommend a change in the competition's format. The executive board acted on the CEC's recommendation and ensured Associate participation by expanding the tournament from 10 to 14 teams.
As earlier reported, some Members believe the stretch to 14 teams is part of a deal to build support for the last major issue for discussion at the conference: scrapping the rotation policy for the appointment of the ICC president.
Pakistan and Bangladesh - the two Members who were to nominate the next candidates for president and vice-president by the rotation system - are opposed to the change. In order to pass a resolution amending the rule about the appointment of the ICC chief, eight of ten Full Members and 38 of 50 Associates will have to vote in favour of the motion. That vote could now be a formality with the Associates being placated by Tuesday's decision.
The ICC on Monday confirmed that the next edition of the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, will feature 10 teams, and the format could be like the one that was used in the 1992 edition.
The Executive Board, which met in Mumbai, confirmed their decision made in October 2010 that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand and the ICC Cricket World Cup in England in 2019 will be a 10-team event. The Board agreed that the 2015 World Cup will comprise the existing 10 Full Members, however, they gave notice to all Full Members that participation in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup will be determined on the basis of qualification. It was also agreed that post the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 there will be promotion and relegation introduced in the ODI League.
The Board had also decided in October 2010 that the ICC World Twenty20 will comprise 16 teams. This would allow six Associates or Affiliates the opportunity to participate in an ICC Global event every two years.
