Sachin Tendulkar announces retirement from ODIs, wants to focus on Test cricket:

Putting an end to his 23-year old one-day career, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar today announced retirement from the 50-over format.

Sachin Tendulkar will not pad up against Pakistan next Sunday. After 23 years of playing one-day internationals, the batting great has announced retirement from the 50-over format of the game.

Sachin's announcement came on a day that the Indian team for the two T20s and three ODIs with Pakistan, to be played starting next week, is being decided. Sachin has already stopped playing T20s.

The Board of control for cricket in India (BCCI) released Sachin's statement on Sunday morning. It read, "I have decided to retire from the One Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest. I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years."

"I have decided to retire from the One-Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest," the 39-year-old said in a statement released by the BCCI today.

"I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years," he added.

Tendulkar, considered the most complete batsman in modern cricket and one who was considered next only to the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, retires from the ODI format at the top of the run-getters' list.

Tendulkar goes out after amassing 18,426 runs in 463 one-dayers at an average of 44.83. The diminutive right-hander has an astonishing 49 hundreds in the format, including a double hundred -- the first in this form of the game.

Tendulkar made his ODI debut against Pakistan way back in 1989 and interestingly he is quitting the scene just ahead of another series against the arch-rivals.

The Mumbaikar, who made himself unavailable for Twenty20 after playing just one game in 2006, will now remain active in only the Test arena.

The brightest moment of his ODI career came last year when he finally became part of a World Cup winning Indian team after five previous appearances.

Ricky Ponting retiring doesn't mean Sachin also has to quit: Gautam Gambhir

Ricky Ponting's decision to call it quits on Thursday might have added fuel to the fire in the raging debate over Sachin Tendulkar's retirement, but India opener Gautam Gambhir feels his senior team mate still has a lot to offer.

"Nobody can force anyone to retire. Each individual knows when is the best time to retire. Ponting retiring doesn't mean that Sachin also has to quit now. It's an individual decision. They are from two different countries, two different individuals. So there is no question of a comparison," Gambhir said.

At a time when the 39-year-old Mumbaikar's place in the team has been questioned by critics, Gambhir went to the extent of saying that Tendulkar still has the "capability to make lots of runs for India".

"His presence in the dressing room itself is a big thing for the country. I am sure he will come out of it. Everybody goes through ups and downs. It's the sheer joy of playing the game, he loves playing.

"He is the greatest cricketer India has produced. Not just on the field, as a mentor he contributes off the field too. He still has the capability to make lots of runs for India," Gambhir said at an event here.

Coming back to Ponting, who on Thursday announced that he will retire from Test cricket after playing in the third Test against South Africa in Perth, Gambhir called him Australia's "best ever captain".

Sachin Tendulkar does not need any advise on his future: Rajiv Shukla

Sachin Tendulkar's streak of low scores might have raised a question mark over his future but senior BCCI official and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla on Monday came out in support of the senior batsman saying one needs to look at his "colossal record" before making any comment.

"He will hang up his boots when he thinks it's time for him to go. He does not need any advise on this. Before making a comment on his performance you have to see his colossal record and his past performance," Shukla told reporters outside the Parliament adding that the veteran cricketer will come back strongly in the forthcoming matches.

"He will do well in forthcoming matches," Shukla said.

Tendulkar has been battling poor form for sometime and his last 10 innings have yielded just 153 runs at an average of 15.3, the lowest by an Indian top-order batsman in the corresponding period.

The 39-year-old's last three figure score in Tests came in January last year against South Africa.

Asked about India's loss to England in the second Test at Mumbai today, Shukla said: "It is sad. After the victory in Ahmedabad the batting line-up could not perform the way it should have. It was a turning wicket and English spinners performed better."

Shukla, though, said the board will look into the matter and would take necessary corrective measures.

"We will discuss the shortcomings and so will the team management to see how the performance can be improved," he said.

On the selection of the team for the next two Tests against England, Shukla said it remains the prerogative of the Selection Committee and nobody should interfere in their domain.

"Selectors are also former players and they will take a call on this. Whom to select and whom not to, it is their domain," he added.

New Delhi: Cricketer and newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday said no to staying in the bungalow allotted to him saying he did not want to waste tax payers' money. Sachin refused to take possession of 5, Tughlaq lane allotted to him in the capacity of being a Rajya Sabha MP.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, Sachin explained why he decided against taking the bungalow opposite AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's house. "I am not keen on staying in any government bungalow when I will be in Delhi for only a few days. I feel this would be a waste of tax payers money and it would be better if the bungalow is allotted to someone else who needs the bungalow more than me."

The cricketer said that he would prefer to stay in a hotel in Delhi every time he is here. "For me the honour of being nominated as a Rajya Sabha MP matters much more than the perks and privileges like being given a government bungalow," added Sachin.

5, Tughlaq Lane was previously occupied by former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma and former Haryana chief minister Bansi Lal's son Surender Singh.

Sachin is the first active sportsperson and cricketer to have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha under the Prominent Citizens Quota.

Sachin was nominated to the Upper House along with film actress Rekha and industrialist Anu Aga in April, but had to wait to take his oath until the end of IPL season 5.

The nomination of Sachin had sparked a political slugfest with the opposition parties questioning the timing of the move by the government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena had said that the timing of the nomination suggests that it is aimed at distracting attention from scams.

A first time Member of Parliament is allotted a Type 5 or Type 6 accommodation. However, due to security reasons, special exception was made for Tendulkar. He has been allotted a Type 7 bungalow, which is spread over 7,000 square feet, has big lawns and five spacious bedrooms. The bungalow will be done up before the start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, when Tendulkar is said to debut his political innings.

Sachin Tendulkar's nomination to the Rajya Sabha was approved by the Indian President. India's Prime Minister. Manmohan Singh had earlier put forward batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar for membership of the upper house of parliament. 

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's letter recommending the cricketer's nomination to the upper house or Rajya Sabha needed to be endorsed by the Indian President Pratibha Patil. And the President has now approved the nomination making Tendulkar take one of 12 seats in the Rajya Sabha that are reserved for those persons "having special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service." 

Tendulkar, who turned 39 this week, was in New Delhi to play an Indian Premier League match for the Mumbai Indians against the Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Friday. 

Earlier on Thursday, Tendulkar and his wife had called on ruling Congress party president Sonia Gandhi at her residence -- a meeting described as a "courtesy visit" by the local media. 

The vast majority of the 250 seats in Indian parliament's upper house are filled by members elected by the legislatures in their home states. 

But 12 seats lie in the favour of the president and are normally awarded to people who have excelled in such fields as the arts, science and sport. 

Tendulkar's name is among four that the government has recommended to the president to fill seats currently lying vacant, the Press Trust of India news agency said. 

Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989 and has played more Tests (188) and one-day internationals (463) than any other player. 

He is the highest run-getter in both forms of the game and last month became the first batsman to complete 100 international centuries -- 51 in Tests and 49 in one-dayers. 

Reports of his Rajya Sabha nomination are likely to spark fresh speculation about his immediate future, although Tendulkar himself has dismissed talk of retirement anytime soon.

Bradman great but Tendulkar greatest: Hussain

In the never-ending debate on who among Sir Donald Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time, former England captain Naseer Hussain on Friday said his vote goes to the iconic Indian.

"Sir Donald Bradman was great but for me the greatest batsman to have ever played the game is Sachin Tendulkar," he said. 

Hussain rubbished the recent spate of criticism of the Indian cricket team after their humiliating defeat in England and Australia, saying that the sub-continental giants were still a force to reckon with. 

"You have Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh. And you - till recently - had (Rahul) Dravid," Hussain said at the India Today Conclave. 

The former batsman, however, pointed out that the main reason for India's dismal show in England and Australia was excessive cricket. 

"What I saw in England a few months after India's World Cup triumph was a team that was not well prepared. They were not quite ready for England. 

"While a lot of the players were undercooked, most of the Indian players were overcooked. There was too much cricket being played (World Cup was followed by almost a two-month long IPL)," said Hussain. 

"The difference between the two sides was England were well prepared while India were not," he added. 

Hussain said there was a need for the cricket board to give adequate rest to the seniors. 

"Modern cricketers are fit, well rested and prepared. That should happen," he insisted. 

India's out-of-favour off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also agreed with Hussain, saying, "It is important to recharge your batteries. When you are getting into 30s, you need break and come back fresh and recharged." 

Hussain though attributed India's World Cup victory last year to the Indian Premier League. 

"IPL has given India players like Suresh Raina who became a massive factor in ODIs (during the World Cup 2011)." 

Hussain pointed out that another problem with Indian cricket is that it was not producing enough quality bowlers. 

"During the England series that followed the World Cup triumph, Praveen Kumar should not have been your best bowler. India always had quality batsmen but where are the bowlers? Where are they coming from?"
